Thanks to Cuties, they delivered a crate of clementines to my office. Each one was easy to peel, had almost no seeds and they’re full of Vitamin C. After a few were shared with coworkers, the rest were taken home and pureed in a food processor to be stirred into a quick bread flavored with specks of fresh rosemary. My knowledge of wine could be more than the average person, for I know my basic pairings with food. I’m also not an aficionado when it comes to tea, but I know enough to start with loose-leaf tea leaves and the different steeping times. However, my knowledge of beer is flat. Last autumn, Jo of AGiftofTea.com — a true tea connoisseur — invited me to her Beer and Tea pairing event in Harlem. Although, my time management is a work in progress, I missed the demonstration. However, I was able to sample Organic Golden Monkey Black, Jasmine Green and Alishan Oolong teas while nibbling on beer flavored popcorn, spicy dried mango from Trader Joe’s (that’s now part of my grocery list) and dark chocolate.
I wanted a special pumpkin muffin—like a unique Halloween costume—to stand out among the store-bought versions. Inspired by the flavors of warm spice tea and bitter coffee you find in a “dirty chai” drink, this is a muffin to nibble on while sipping coffee (or black tea) in a thermos as kids trick and treat in the neighborhood. As an added treat, the muffins are sweetly topped with a generous drizzle of bittersweet chocolate ganache. Autumn is supposed to be a depressing time of year, but today my feelings are different from a few seasons ago. I feel happy. Blessed. In the words of James Brown, “ I Feeeeeel Goooood.” This morning we woke up to a warm and crisp day. The boyfriend and I danced to Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder and classic R&B hits from the past. Buttermilk Pancakes were served with walnuts and figs. Vanilla milk was swirled into French Press coffee. As our food slowly digest, we caught the last end of the second Wall Street movie on television. After a busy summer of my boyfriend’s debut on Broadway and me finally getting a job, we finally relaxed on this Saturday morning, the first day fall. Read more →
